Typical Air Plains 180 FACTORY INSTALLATION
(Air Plains Work Order for installing your APS 180)
- Perform Air Plains "Pre-disassembly" inspection. in accordance with
APS Checklist.
Step 1 of our conversion involves a quick, initial
test flight. It allows us the opportunity to record the performance of the
old engine and any notable discrepancies. These items are, of course,
discussed with the owner prior to the start of any work. We also inventory
and check over your aircraft prior to starting any work.... to ensure a
timely delivery upon completion.
- Install AIR PLAINS 180 horse engine in accordance with APS STC No.
5A4428SW.
Step two involves the actual commencement of engine
conversion, and becomes more detailed in the following steps.
- Perform Air Plains disassembly inspection.
As your engine comes apart and off of the aircraft, we begin our inspection
of your engine baffles, carb heat induction airbox, exhaust stacks, cowl
shock mounts, fasteners, and all related removed components. ANY
DISCREPANCIES FOUND on your baffles, airbox, and exhaust stacks, etc.
(Re-used from your airframe) will be discussed for needed repair. We prefer
to improve these components to "like new" condition, prior to modifying
them to fit the new engine.
- Install AIR PLAINS 2500-2550 Gross Weight Increase Kit.
Normally 2-3 hours, this step involves the limitation of flap travel to
thirty degrees, and the installation of a new airspeed indicator ON
172K-P MODELS ONLY.
- Inspect aircraft for 6 ply tires.
6 ply tires are required
as a part of the 2500-2550 Gross Weight Increase AVAILABLE ON 1969 AND
NEWER AIRPLANES. If you need a tire or two, we will let you know,
- Perform static system leak test BEFORE and AFTER installing new
airspeed indicator. Record leak rates, report any leak rates in excess of
100 feet per minute in accordance with FAR 91.411 paragraph A(2).
During the installation of your new air-speed indicator, your static system
will be leak checked in accordance with the FAR's. Any leak rates in excess
of the required limits will he repaired with your permission.
- Perform flight test of new engine in accordance with APS checklist
and Lycoming recommended break in procedures.
This involves several
steps and inspections, and in the end, your aircraft engine will be test
flown for approximately 3-4 hours, inspected several times, and then
re-inspected once more for final delivery. NOTE: APS personnel will take
special time to instruct you on the performance and break in procedures for
your new Lycoming engine, before delivery.
- Weigh aircraft with electronic scales upon completion of all
maintenance and modifications.
Chances are that this will be the
first time your aircraft has been weighed since it came from the factory.
Our scales are re-calibrated on a regular-basis, to guarantee exact weight,
balance, and C.G. computations.
- Perform Pre-delivery, inspection in accordance with APS checklist.
This is our final check OF EVERYTHING WE HAVE TOUCHED, and we check it
ONE MORE TIME, before delivery.
- Clean aircraft interior and exterior for delivery.
Air Plains
NEVER delivers a dirty airplane.
- Install AIR PLAINS 180 logo decals to empennage aircraft.
Upon customer approval, we install our "180" logo.

Advise of any repairs needed to refurbish engine baffles airbox exhaust
stacks etc to "like new" condition. Please itemize for customer
notification and approval.
Required or excessive repairs are
completed on a quote and bid basis. Our sheet metal personnel can usually
refurbish an entire set of baffles to new condition for less than the cost
of buying one new baffle from the Cessna factory. NOTE: the engine
components listed should not need any repair work, due to the fact
that you are flying under a current annual inspection.
After
refurbishment, the sheet metal components to be installed on the engine are
completely cleaned, treated, primed, painted, and reinstalled with new 1/8th
inch thick red silicone baffle seal.
- Reserved for ANNUAL inspection.

engine conversion is performed.

the same week. (3-4 days!) APS averages the conversion of more than
two airplanes per week!
